About the Timor-Leste Kids Literacy Fund

The Timor-Leste Kids Literacy Fund is a growing, volunteer-driven project started by Troy Mayne, an Australian children’s author and underwater photographer. His bond with this nation began in 1999 during his time with INTERFET, and he is now dedicated to giving back by promoting a love of reading that honors local languages and culture. Our primary goal is the structured translation of the Wally’s Reef Gang book series into Tetun, commencing with Sorry Wally. We are striving to offer cost-free digital versions and coordinate the delivery of physical books to local schools. We are currently managing the essential phases of translation, expert review, and logistics to ensure these educational tools reach the hands of children.

Operating with Openness

Project Evolution

Honest communication guides our journey as we build this literacy project. The fund is currently in a primary establishment stage, operating as a developing, volunteer-led initiative. We are prioritising the creation of clear, ethical processes to ensure that every effort supports the delivery of educational materials to children across Timor-Leste as we grow and refine our groundwork for future impact.

Cultural Integrity — We aim to work with fluent Tetun speakers and local educators so the books use natural language, respect local communities and support children’s learning.
